Once upon a time in a place far, far away a woman named Mercedes Gaytan Cortazar designed beautiful floral arrangements for all her friends and family. Soon after, it became her passion along with caring for her three amazing children.

As time went by, Mercedes decided to make a living out of her passion and Florería Mercedes opened its doors in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Mercedes went on to become one Chihuahua’s premier florists. As she saw her children grow up, she hoped that one of them would carry on her legacy of what had become her very successful business; Mercedes Flowers. But as one became a poet, another, an actress, and her eldest, a ballerina, she feared her passion would not be carried on long after she was gone.

But one day her eldest, Mercedes Cortazar, began tying those ribbons, cutting the stems off flowers and decorating as if she had been doing it all her life. Soon she opened her own business and as the years went by she knew her mother’s legacy would live on. The younger Mercedes went on to have seven children. As the years went by,all of her children saw her create artwork with her hands that resulted in beautifully crafted floral arrangements. These pieces of art went on to be displayed throughout many of the local communities of west Texas, northern Mexico, and southern New Mexico.

As her children grew older, all their life’s journeys took them in different directions. After retiring and leaving the trade that she loved so much, it seemed as though the Mercedes Flowers tradition would seize. However, in 2011, her third daughter, also named Mercedes, decided to carry on the family tradition and bring it to the Austin community. Although it has been almost six decades and three generations since the original Mercedes Flowers (Florería Mercedes) opened its doors in Chihuahua, Mexico, the tradition will live on.

Mercedes Garza Cortazar is proud to open her doors to the newest Mercedes Flowers. While preserving the classy and traditional touch that her mother and grandmother always displayed, Mercedes will include her own modern style that is sure to please the Austin community for generations to come.

Mercedes began her floral career in the 1970's in Mexico. As owner of Mercedes Creative Designs and Floreria Mercedes, She has been an integral part of designing dozens of weddings in Mexico and Texas. She was (and still is) an artist, hand-crafting floral arrangements all of her own vision.

While in El Paso, Mercedes was the floral designer for the El Paso City Ballet with David Duran and the Mexican Consulate. After moving to San Antonio, Texas in 1999, she retired, but continued to work as a freelance designer in her new hometown. Now she has been called back into the arena that originally inspired her design career as part owner of Mercedes Flowers.

Mercedes is a native of Brownsville, Texas and spent much of her life in El Paso, TX. Throughout her life, Mercedes embarked on different career paths before deciding to hang her hat in the corporate world.

Growing up in the flower business, Mercedes developed a passion at a very early age. Watching her grandmother and mother make a life out of designing floral concepts inspired Mercedes to carry on the tradition, and a longtime passion for flowers, art and design has led her on this journey to revive the family business.

Now as the legacy continues, incorporating classic and modern styling, Mercedes has carried on the belief that there are no right or wrong flowers to use in design. The flower you select only reflects your style and personality. However, as designers, she and her team will guide you to the colors and flowers that will be uniquely your style and personality.
